When You Leave a Comment 💬 

When you leave a comment on our site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, plus your IP address and browser user agent string. Why? Simply to help us spot and block spam.

An anonymised string created from your email address (a hash) might be sent to the Gravatar service to see if you use it. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture becomes visible to the public right next to your comment. You can check out Gravatar’s privacy policy here: https://automattic.com/privacy/.

Uploading Media 📸

If you upload images to the website, please avoid uploading files with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the site can download and extract that location data, and we want to keep your coordinates private.

The Cookie Protocol 🍪

  • Comments: If you drop a comment, you can opt-in to saving your name, email, and website in cookies. This is just for your convenience so you don’t have to type it all out again next time. These last for one year.

  • Logins: If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to see if your browser accepts them. This contains zero personal data and is discarded the moment you close your browser.

  • Active Sessions: When you log in, we set up a few cookies to save your login details and screen choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options last for a year. Tick “Remember Me”, and you’re sorted for two weeks. Log out, and the login cookies are cleared.

  • Editing: If you edit or publish an article, an extra cookie is saved in your browser. It just holds the post ID of the article you edited and expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content from Other Sites 🔗

Articles on this site might include embedded content (like videos, images, or external articles). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you had visited that other site directly. These external sites might collect data about you, use their own cookies, embed extra third-party tracking, and monitor how you interact with that content.

Data Sharing & Retention ⏳

  • Password Resets: If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email for security purposes.

  • Comments: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are kept indefinitely. This helps us automatically recognise and approve any follow-up comments instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

  • Registered Users: For users that register on our site, we securely store the personal information they provide in their user profile. You can see, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (you just can’t change your username). Our website administrators can also see and edit that info.

Your Rights Over Your Data 🛡️ You are in control. If you have an account here or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. You can also ask us to erase any personal data we have. Please note: This doesn’t include any data we are legally, administratively, or securely obliged to keep.

Where Your Data Goes 🌐 Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service to keep our ecosystem secure.
